Sustainability

Our commitment

Quality and sustainability mean everything to THE LYOCELL COMPANY.

As the largest makers of viscose fibre, we take our commitment seriously to source wood pulp responsibly, minimise emissions and help build communities. From sourcing to production, THE LYOCELL COMPANY is committed to sustainability and environmental protection as a trusted supplier of high-quality lyocell fibre and a responsible member of the community.

CARBON-NEUTRALITY

Our products are derived from natural, renewable, and biodegradable materials, providing consumers with sustainable choices in both apparel and daily-use applications, thereby helping reduce individual carbon footprints.

Lyocell fibers are sourced from sustainably managed plantations. Trees take root in fertile soil, absorb sunlight and water, and capture carbon dioxide as they grow naturally, typically reaching maturity within 5 to 7 years.

Our group’s sister companies and suppliers operate sustainably managed plantations in Brazil and Indonesia, and are committed to a “1:1” forest conservation approach, under which plantation development is matched by corresponding areas designated for conservation, restoration and responsible management. Through a combination of financial investment, land conservation, and ecological restoration, we aim to balance production with biodiversity protection and the enhancement of ecosystem services, reflecting our long-term commitment to sustainable development and zero deforestation.

The Group plants approximately 1.5 million tree seedlings every day. We also support the protection of intact forest landscapes (IFLs), which serve as important carbon sinks while safeguarding biodiversity.

Our Carbon Emission Reduction Initiatives

At the end of 2020, we launched our Sustainability Vision 2030 to guide the Company’s sustainable development over the next decade. Under this vision, we have committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, producing recycled fibers using 100% alternative raw materials, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Sateri voluntarily participates in climate disclosure through CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) and has been recognized as a “CDP Enhanced Supporter” for four consecutive years.

Globally, regulations are being strengthened to restrict or phase out single-use plastics. In response, Sateri supports and promotes the use of 100% biodegradable raw materials in the nonwovens industry, contributing to reduced environmental impact and the transition toward plastic-free products.

SOURCING

Sateri does not source wood pulp from natural, ancient or endangered forests. Our dissolving pulp comes from sustainably-managed plantations of eucalyptus trees, which mature in just five to seven years. This combines a steady, sustainable supply with rapid reforestation when harvested areas are replanted.

MANUFACTURING

Our five viscose mills in China are among the newest in the world, incorporating modern European technology and comprehensive environmental systems to maximise efficiency and minimise waste. Most of the chemicals and water are recycled and reused. We adhere to all local regulations, all effluent is treated properly and our emissions are far below the industry standards set by the Chinese government.

We are a founding member of the Collaboration for Sustainable Development of Viscose (CV), an industry initiative to address sustainability challenges and drive market transformation.

SOCIAL

Sustainability extends to communities. Beyond creating jobs and a value chain of suppliers, Sateri’s community efforts include donating thousands of library books, helping with disaster relief, supporting cultural activities and conducting environmental awareness training.
